A treadmill is one of the best investments for your home gym: you can walk or jog any time, whatever the weather. But there are many models and it's easy to pick the wrong one. In this guide we walk you through what to check before you buy, so you choose the right treadmill for your space and the way you train.
1. Decide how you'll use it: walking, jogging or running
This is the most important question, because it drives almost everything else:
- Walking every day or while you work: a compact treadmill or a walking pad with moderate speed and low noise is enough.
- Brisk walking and jogging: look for a folding treadmill with a 2.5 HP motor and, if possible, some incline.
- Running several times a week: aim for a stronger motor (3.0 HP or more), a longer belt and good cushioning.
2. Motor power (HP)
The motor determines how stable the treadmill feels at higher speeds and how well it handles frequent use. As a general reference:
- 2.0 – 2.5 HP: walking and light jogging.
- 3.0 HP or more: frequent jogging and running, or if several people at home will use it.
If the manufacturer lists both continuous and peak power, look at the continuous rating: it's what the motor sustains throughout your workout.
3. Maximum user weight
Every treadmill has a weight limit. A good rule of thumb is to choose one rated for at least about 45 lb (20 kg) more than your body weight: the motor and frame work with more headroom and the treadmill lasts longer.
4. Running belt size
The belt is the surface you step on. For walking, a compact belt works well. For running you need more length, because your stride gets longer. If you're tall or plan to run, check the belt dimensions on the product page before you decide.
5. Incline: fixed, manual or electric
Walking on an incline makes your workout more challenging without having to go faster. There are three types:
- Fixed: the treadmill always sits at the same incline (typical of manual treadmills).
- Manual: you set the incline by hand before you start.
- Electric: you change it with a button while you train.
If you enjoy uphill walks, look for a treadmill with a good incline range, like our Foldable Electric Treadmill with up to 16% incline.
6. Space: folding or not?
Measure where you'll use it and where you'll store it. Folding treadmills lift up and store in a small footprint, ideal for apartments. Always leave clear space behind the treadmill for safety.
7. Noise
If you live in an apartment or train early in the morning, noise matters. Compact home treadmills are usually quieter than gym models. Placing a mat underneath helps reduce vibration and protects your floor.
8. Electric or manual
Electric: the motor drives the belt, you can set a steady speed and it usually has programs and a display. Manual (motorless): the belt moves with your own stride, needs no outlet and is usually more affordable. Our Foldable Manual Treadmill with Incline is a great option if you want something simple and cord-free.

Frequently asked questions
How much space do I need for a treadmill?
Check the unfolded dimensions on the product page and add clear space around it, especially behind. If your space is very tight, a walking pad is the most compact option.
Can I use a treadmill in an apartment?
Yes. Choose a compact, quiet model, use a mat underneath and avoid high speeds during your neighbors' quiet hours.
Does it need assembly?
Most folding treadmills arrive nearly assembled and only need simple setup. Check the included manual.
